| Abstract |
Introduction Even in peaceful and healthy regions, adolescence is a challenging time of life in which a certain detachment from the parental home, a change in romantic relationships, a turn to work and study, the question of moving out of the parental household and many other issues have to be clarified. Under the conditions of war and occupation, this phase of life between the ages of 16 and 19 is of particular importance. Method Selected cases from a child and adolescent psychiatric care clinic in Lviv in the Ukraine are analysed qualitatively to determine the extent to which there is a particular risk of psychological stress during this developmental phase. Results In addition to individual cases of mental illnesses such as ADHD, autism and depression, in the age phase immediately before coming of age, the question of the extent to which a young man (much less than a young woman) is obliged to do his military service, to what extent a personal attitude is necessary or whether it is a civic duty and to what extent it may be possible to avoid this responsibility is relevant. The 16-18-year-old young man in particular is exposed to considerable stress factors here and the use of drugs, for example, in this age phase also serves to avoid having to really face up to these existential issues. Discussion While there is a great deal of literature on the stress experienced by children and adults in times of war, the specific constellation of late adolescence between the ages of 16 and 19 in the context of compulsory military service and eligibility for military service has received little attention. The individual cases are highly complex and a systematic differential diagnosis is required in any case. |
