Aims: There is a growing research interest in the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in adolescents due to the significant challenges they face in psychosocial functioning, particularly in interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this study was to develop a protocol of short-term group schema therapy for adolescents with BPD features and to evaluate its effectiveness in reducing symptoms and improving overall functioning. Methods: So far seven out of eight adolescents (14 to 18 years old) with BPD features (meeting ≥5 criteria in DSM-5 or having a score of ≥9 in the semi-structured interview SCID-5-PD) were recruited and completed a 36-session intervention program in two therapeutic groups. Four adolescents were placed in control group (TAU). Assessments of BPD manifestations, general functioning, comorbidity disorders were measured before, in the middle and at the end of the program. For the outcome measure we used Borderline Personality Features Scale for Children (BPFS-C) and for secondary measures we used C-GAS, SDQ and RCADS. Descriptive and correlation analyses were conducted, along with assessments of the trend in treatment effects. Results and Conclusions: No participants attempted suicide throughout the intervention program. BPD manifestations and comorbid symptoms were reduced. All participants showed general psychosocial improvement and developed better coping styles. |
