Abstract Background:
Juvenile detainees face significant challenges during reintegration into society, particularly when compounded by mental health issues. This case study explores the experience of a 17-year-old male detainee in Indonesia diagnosed with depressive disorder and highlights the complexities of transition planning.

Methods:
The patient, incarcerated for two years due to gang-related violence and drug use, exhibited depressive symptoms assessed via the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI). Structured activities during detention, including vocational training and religious practices, fostered emotional stability and a sense of purpose. However, his depressive symptoms resurfaced upon learning of his early release, revealing underlying fears and uncertainties about reintegration. Counseling sessions provided a platform for exploring his concerns and preparing him for life post-incarceration.

Results:
During detention, supportive relationships and structured routines were protective factors, alleviating depressive symptoms. However, the prospect of release triggered emotional distress, including anxiety, sadness, and shame, exacerbated by anticipated stigma and strained family dynamics. Counseling helped the detainee articulate his mixed emotions, identify goals, and develop coping strategies for stigma, family reintegration, and self-identity. A follow-up CDI assessment showed a reduction in depressive symptoms post-intervention.

Conclusions:
This case highlights the importance of comprehensive, individualized support for juvenile detainees during the transition from detention to society. Structured routines, pre-release counseling, and family engagement are crucial in mitigating mental health risks and fostering resilience. Juvenile detention systems must adopt holistic reintegration programs that address emotional, social, and practical needs, reducing recidivism and promoting successful societal reintegration.
