Abstract Aims: Evaluate associations between parental attitudes and probable mental health disorders in French elementary schools children
Methods: Enabee 2022 is a pre-school (3-6 years) and elementary school (6-11 years) based national cross-sectional study that collected data from parents, teachers and children themselves (6-11 years) in elementary schools. Parenting attitudes (positive parenting -PP, and two negative attitudes: inconsistent discipline -ID, and poor supervision –PS) were assessed with the 9-item Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (3 questions by dimension quoted 1 “never” to 5 “always”). Children mental health was measured using the parent and teacher SDQs, and the Dominic Interactive a pictorial self-administered questionnaire. Responses from all informants were subsequently combined to estimate three probable mental health disorders: emotional disorder, Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Results: Parents, teachers, and children completed the questionnaires for 8,172 children aged 6-11 years. Average PP was 13.64 (SD=0.02), ID 8.00 (SD=0.03), and PS 3.30 (SD=0.01). PP was negatively associated with oppositional and ADHD difficulties (p=0.009; p=0.0264). ID and PS were significantly higher among boys than girls (p < .00001; p=0.0021). ID decreased with age of the children (from 8.30 to 8.01). PS was positively associated with ODD and ADHD (p < .0001; P=0.005); ID was positively associated with ODD, ADHD and emotional disorder (p=0.0366; p < .0001; p < .0001).
Conclusions: Parental attitudes differed by child’s gender and age. Negative attitudes and low positive attitudes were associated with most children mental health disorders.
