Abstract Early detection and treatment of emotional and behavioral problems are critical, yet mental health care for young children (0-6 years) is still underdeveloped compared to services for older children. Investing in early childhood mental health is not only essential for the child and family but also offers long-term economic benefits. The Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) framework is a relational way of working, with a growing body of research and interventions. While psychotherapeutic approaches a.o. are the first choice, pharmacotherapeutic interventions may sometimes be considered. However, research on medication in young children is limited.
This workshop will show how an IECMH-perspective can guide child psychiatrists in making informed pharmacotherapeutic decisions. Careful diagnostic assessment, indication, and monitoring are essential when medication is considered. Psychotropic medication should always be accompanied with psychological and social support. A case study (with animated video) will illustrate two key aspects:
1. Developmentally sensitive, relational care: Considering the child’s context, family, and culture in a tailored, transdisciplinary approach. Within a reflective practice promoting self-reflection and collaboration in decision-making.
2. Evidence-based practice: Combining scientific knowledge, professional expertise, and family preferences.
We will show how the Dutch Knowledge Centre for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry aims to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and clinical practice (www.kenniscentrum-kjp.nl). During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences and questions. Additionally, we aim to establish an international network to support clinical decision-making and further research in this emerging field.
