Abstract Aims: Inpatient care remains a mandatory option for high risk suicidal children and adolescents, without regard to relatively lack of scientific proofs about the efficiency of this care on preventing suicidal reattempts The aim of this study is to fill this gap by looking for epidemiological links between referral to inpatient care and suicide reattempts.
Methods: This retrospective epidemiological study conducted on French youths admitted at pediatric emergency following a suicidal attempt considered whereas reference to inpatient care would be a risk factor of suicidal reattempt within 6 months.
Results: 419 adolescents were included in the study and 4.5% of them presented a suicidal reattempt during the following period. Using logistic regression adjusted for severity factors and suicide attempt risk factors, we found that reference to inpatient care was a risk factor of suicidal reattempt with an Odds Ratio of 3.3 (CI=1.25 ; 9.51).
Conclusions: This is the first study showing that child and adolescent psychiatry inpatient care is associated with a higher risk of suicide reattempt in adolescents. Inpatient care may expose young patients to several factors increasing the risk of reattempt. In addition to objective risk factors for reattempt, clinicians' subjective perceptions of the seriousness of the situation could lead to hospitalization of the subjects most at risk.
