Abstract Reading and/or spelling disorders are common developmental learning disorders with strong impact on child school and psychosocial development. Psychiatric comorbidities are often, mainly ADHD, anxiety and depression.
Recent genetic research based on worldwide selected samples identified 42 independent genome-wide significant loci, 15 in genes linked to cognitive ability/educational attainment, and 27 new and potentially more specific to dyslexia. Dyslexia polygenic scores explained up to 6% of variance in reading traits.
Recent advances were made in intervention research based on game-based spelling and reading remediation. Studies from our lab strengthens that applying a digital game-based learning app (Meister Cody) showed substantial improvements in spelling and precursor skills compared to a control intervention. App based interventions provide several advantages in intervention, such as immediate feedback, adaptivity, possible facilitation of flow experience, and broad access to the intervention.
