Aims: It is essential to adjust the environment at home and school according to their characteristics in the treatment of children with neurodevelopmental disorders. However, medical-educational cooperation is labor-intensive. We hypothesized that medical-educational cooperation would be beneficial to children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their parents regarding the treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the elements of such cooperation. Methods: A questionnaire survey was administered to parents with children with neurodevelopmental disorders who are attending the Center of Child Psychiatry in Ehime University Hospital or the Department of Neuropsychiatry in Kyoto University Hospital, or who belong to family associations for developmental disabilities in Ehime or Kyoto prefectures. The survey was conducted via a web-based survey and distributed from July 2023 to April 2024. The questions included basic information about the children and some standardized rating scales. Respondents were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of medical-educational cooperation and analyzed by multiple logistic regression. P < 0.05 was used as the significance level. Results: Valid responses were obtained from 90 parents. The children were 11.9 ± 2.9 years old, and the diagnoses (with overlapped) were autism spectrum disorder in 71, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder in 40, intellectual disability in 14, specific learning disorder in 8, developmental coordination disorder in 5. The presence of medical-educational cooperation was 45 parents, and absence of medical-educational cooperation was also 45 parents. In the multiple logistic regression, good relationship between the children and the parents and the physician was significantly associated with the presence of medical-educational cooperation (p=0.024, odds ratio 1.97, 95%CI: 1.09-3.55). Conclusions: It was suggested that good relationship between the children and the parents and the physician was involved in the medical-educational cooperation. |
