Abstract Background: Stories in our personal lives and about our professional experiences shape our professional identity. These narratives crystallize within the culture in which we grow up and in interaction with the people we meet. They merge into a personal collection of values, attitudes, hopes, dreams, knowledge and skills, that shape and give meaning to our professional identity. They underlie the choices that we made and make as professionals, provide direction and energy for our work.

Methods: This workshop provides participants insight into their personal narratives and stories and in what way they shaped and follow their paths. We discuss how they can function as a protective factor or as a powerful antidote against an abundancy of negative feelings at work and burn out. It applies an interactive format with personal reflection to help participants look into what personal collection of values, attitudes, hopes, dreams, knowledge and skills are at play. Finally, stories that have shaped you, and norms and values of importance are shared between participants.

Results: By using story-telling narrative techniques and by switching between the different positions at the level of the listener, story-writer and story-teller, participants gain deeper insight into what and how stories helped shape and continue to play a key role in their professional identity formation.

Conclusion: An exploration of personal stories using narrative techniques can provide a fresh view on one’s professional identity formation and open up ways to give direction and energy in your daily lives and careers.
