| Abstract |
Aims: Precision psychiatry gains momentum in modern clinical practice. Although there is a growing body of evidence for individualizing psychiatric treatment in adult patients, the field of precision psychiatry in children and adolescents is still in its infancy, with few studies mostly focusing on CYP2D6 and CYP2C19 enzymes. Here, we meta-analyzed the available experimental evidence concerning the correlation of genomic variants with treatment response efficacy to risperidone, one of the most widely used antipsychotic drugs for children and adolescents. Methods: Our meta-analysis of 105 published studies including over 5000 adult schizophrenic patients and over 6000 controls, from different racial and population groups, investigating genomic variants in 25 different genes, indicated that the rs6313 genomic variant in the HTR2A gene could be exploited as a pharmacogenomic biomarker for risperidone treatment response of schizophrenia patients. Results and Conclusions: Based on these findings we are currently conducting a retrospective study in children and adolescents under risperidone treatment to confirm whether this variant could be exploited as a pharmacogenomic biomarker for individualizing risperidone treatment in children and adolescents. |
