THE EFFECT OF ANTIPSYCHOTIC MEDICATION ON SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SKILLS IN ATTENTION DEFICIT AND HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER Saniye Tülin FİDAN1, Merve Nur SARIYER2 1Department of Child And Adolescent Psychiatry, Osmangazi University, Eskisehir, Turkey tulincps@hotmail.com 2Department of Speech and Language Therapy, Anadolu University, Eskisehir, Turkey mnsariyer@anadolu.edu.tr Aims:Antipsychotic medications, particularly atypical antipsychotics, can be used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) under certain circumstances. These drugs can influence language and speech in various ways. Antipsychotics may slow down speech rate and fluency due to their side effects, and long-term use can result in speech impediments or difficulty with word retrieval. Additionally, cognitive functions, including language comprehension and production, might be affected, particularly in cases where dopamine receptors are targeted. Studies have shown that while antipsychotic medications may be beneficial for certain psychiatric conditions, their use in ADHD treatment requires careful consideration of potential negative impacts on language and communication skills. The aim of study is to examine effect of antipschotic drugs on speech and language. Methods: All participants had ADHD treatment and were using antipsychotic drugs . A form prepared by researchers to investigate the effect of antipsychotic medications on language and speech. A speech and language therapist evaluate each cases by one by and also the form performed the parents among. Results and Conclusions: The study included 20 participants (10 girls, 10 boys) between 72 and 168 months (Mean age=10.1 months; standard deviation =3.75). Whole the cases 75% of realize that antipscyhotic medications affect speech and language skills. ADHD medication with antipsyhotic affects fluency, pragmatic and semantic skills, cooperation, etc. In ADHD treatment we must consider the side effects of drugs on speech and language among early childhood . |
