Abstract Aims
Cyberbullying is an increasingly widespread phenomenon among teenagers, with harmful consequences for their psychological and social well-being. Hence the need to conduct this study in order to explore the prevalence of cyberbullying among Tunisian adolescents and to assess the protective factors that foster resilience against cyberbullying.
Methods
This is a cross-sectional descriptive and correlational study among students from two public middle schools in the Sousse governorate (Tunisia) for the year 2020/2021. We used an information sheet concerning: Socio-demographic data, schooling, peer relationships and child's use of Internet; the “Cyberbullying Screening Test” to assess cyber-bullying behavior and the “Resilience factors inventory “to evaluate the protective factors that promote resilience against cyberbullying.
Results
We included in our study 238 middle-school students. The sex ratio was 0.57 in favour of girls. 83.1% of teens were between 13 and 15 years old. More than half of them (51.3%) reported having been cyberbullied at least once.
Cyberbullying was negatively associated with family protective factors (parental support and feelings of security) with a significant P= 0.007 and individual protective factors (self-esteem and personal efficacy), with a P of 0.019. There was no relationship between cyberstalking and social protective factors (support from peers or a trusted person).
Conclusion
Cyberbullying is a major challenge for adolescents. By building resilience in young people, we can help to create a school environment where every student can thrive without fear of harassment.
