Abstract

When it comes to the way residential care, adoption services and foster care work in Greece we have to mention 2 important changes that happened in recent years. First in 2018 a law was implemented regarding the promotion of foster care and adoption that included a national database recording all available children to social services (something that was not available up to then). Secondly in 2022 another law was voted that tried to organise an up to then almost chaotic system. Thus it provided basic structure and way of function for all residential care homes, which were also recorded officially according to their funding (state-run, private, non-profit, church-funded). The aim of this presentation is to provide an overview of Greece’s residential care system now, compared to before 2018 and recent changes. Furthermore to give an insight of how and which children in Greece end up under social care, what ages they are and what provisional plan is made for them by their residential homes. Lastly we will comment on public opinions regarding adoption and foster care in Greece, especially as to how these are mirrored in candidate parents/carers declared preferences.
