Abstract
|
Background: While effective parent-based interventions for child internalizing and externalizing symptoms are increasingly available, access to supportive parent training programs remains limited. Methods: To bridge this gap, we propose a self-help mobile and web application for parents that utilizes affective computing and large language model technology to deliver real-time, personalized training and feedback. In an iterative development process, we will interview pediatric mental healthcare professionals (n≈18) and parents (n≈18) about challenges faced in caring for a child with difficult emotions and challenging behavior and how an interactive self-help app may help them with these challenges. The app will be designed to be user-friendly, engaging, and accessible, using evidence-based techniques with the aim of enhancing parenting practices and improving child wellbeing. Results: Initial interviews will take place in February 2025 with follow-up interviews occurring until May 2025. We will present the clinician and parent feedback, the resulting design and functionalities of the app that will be tested in an open trial in the Fall of 2025, and our plans for implementing our solution in CAMHS. Discussion: We anticipate that the app will be valuable to parents at various stages of help-seeking and treatment, across different sectors, as well as to mental health professionals working with children who experience difficult emotions and challenging behaviors.
