Abstract

Aim: Custody disputes are frequently experienced during divorce proceedings. Sometimes parents may ignore the emotional abuse of the child and try to manipulate the child to gain benefits. In this case, parental alienation syndrome may develop. It is very important for family courts to differentiate this situation. Untreated parental alienation can lead to long-term traumatic psychological and physical effects in the children concerned. Methods, Results and Conclusions: In order to draw attention to this issue, two cases of parental alienation syndrome are presented. In both cases, it was observed that while talking about neutral subjects, they spoke with expressions appropriate for their age and development and had emotional participation appropriate to the subject; however, while talking about their parents, they made contradictory statements that were inappropriate for their age, which gave the impression that they had been taught, their anxiety levels increased, their speech rate increased, and their affect was dysphoric. They were also very angry with their alienated parents. The parent of one of the cases accepted the recommended medication (SSRIs) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy treatments as the case also met the diagnoses of severe anxiety disorder and tic disorder and benefited from the treatment. however, the parent of the other case did not accept the treatment and a health cautionary decision was issued for the case.
