Abstract The viennese outpatient and day clinic “Extended Soulspace" promotes interdisciplinary collaboration between psychiatry and pedagogy and serves as a central social psychiatric point of contact for mentally stressed children and adolescents who are placed in foster care. Extended Soul Space aims to reduce the number of long-term stays in inpatient psychiatry. It is based on social psychiatric principles and patient-centered care. An evaluation is conducted to continuously improve the services provided, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, which are reflected on three levels (micro, meso, and macro). After five years, the project shows promising results: it strengthens the resilience of the affected children and adolescents and contributes to relieving the psychiatric system in Vienna.
