Abstract Aims:
Describe the psychiatric and somatic histories of children who have experienced traumatic events.
Methods:
This retrospective descriptive study reviewed the records of all patients who consulted the "Trauma and Resilience" unit at the Child Psychiatry Department of Mongi Slim University Hospital, Marsa, between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.
Results:
Our study included 278 cases. Among the patients, 19.1% had organic histories, 18.3% had psychiatric histories, and 4% had both. Asthma was the most common organic condition (5.4%), followed by prematurity (2.9%), febrile seizures (2.2%), and epilepsy (1.4%). An atopic background was found in 2.5% of cases. Of those with organic histories, 17.7% had experienced violence, most often school bullying (22.9%), physical violence (20.3%), psychological violence (19.4%), and sexual assault (12.7%).
Regarding psychiatric histories, 19.1% had neurodevelopmental disorders, and in all instances, a single patient exhibited multiple neurodevelopmental disorders. Other psychiatric conditions included sphincter control disorders (3.6%), conduct disorders (1.1%) and obsessive-compulsive disorders (0.7%). Among those with psychiatric histories, 18.5% had experienced violence, most frequently school bullying (31.4%), physical violence (21.5%), psychological violence (17.2%), and sexual assault (14.5%). A significant correlation (p < 0.05) was found between psychiatric history and exposure to various forms of violence, including physical violence, emotional violence, and school bullying.
Conclusion :
Children seen in a trauma unit often present with both somatic and psychiatric histories, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive assessments and individualized interventions.
