| Abstract |
Aim: This case report explores the intersection of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and violent media exposure in adolescents who engage in violent criminal behavior. Specifically, we investigate how such media may trigger violent actions in vulnerable youth with ASD and highlight the role of forensic psychological assessments in understanding such cases. Methods: We examine two distinct yet related cases of adolescents diagnosed with ASD who committed violent crimes. F, a 14-year-old, tragically killed his two sisters, while S a 17-year-old boy attempted to murder his mother. Both adolescents had a history of extensive exposure to violent media, including graphic films. Forensic evaluations, including structured interviews, psychological testing, and behavioral assessments, were conducted to understand their motives and mental state during the crimes. Results: In F’s case, the combination of violent media consumption and underlying ASD-related difficulties in emotional regulation and empathy appears to have played a significant role in the tragic event. The second adolescent exhibited psychotic symptoms triggered by violent media, leading to his violent outburst. Both offenders demonstrated marked improvement following intervention, with M excelling academically and beginning college, while the second adolescent showed stable psychological recovery. Conclusion: These cases underscore the potent impact of violent media on adolescents, particularly those with ASD, whose cognitive and emotional processing may exacerbate violent tendencies. This report calls for heightened awareness of media influences and early psychological intervention for at-risk youth, emphasizing the critical role of forensic assessments in shaping treatment and prevention strategies. |
