| Abstract |
Aims: Mental illnesses are common and treatable conditions. Yet it often takes too long before people affected by mental illnesses seek or receive help. Parents and children often feel ashamed, guilty for how they feel, or scared of what others might think about them or their loved ones. This, and delays in seeking treatment are often caused by stigma. It is this stigma that we want to address, because the sooner families get help, the more effective the help can be. Methods: The presenters of this workshop are the initiators of the international cycling campaign ‘Break the Stigma for Families (BtSfF)’. This initiative, supported by local cycling networks, fosters connection and raises awareness by cycling together with families affected by mental illnesses. During this workshop, the presenters will share their personal experiences with mental illness in their families. They will discuss how opening up and sharing their stories with others helped building resilience and strength within their own families. Results: Participants of this workshop will learn practical and straightforward ways to help break stigma for families in their own communities. |
