Abstract Aim: This study aims to evaluate executive functions, reaction time, auditory selective attention and auditory processing performance in adolescents aged 12–18 years diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder-Predominantly Inattentive Presentation (ADHD-I).
Materials and Methods: DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, SNAP-IV scale, and comprehensive clinical evaluation were used to diagnose 40 adolescents aged 12–18 years with ADHD-I. These adolescents were compared with a control group of 35 healthy peers within the same age range. Participants were assessed for psychopathologies using a semi-structured interview based on DSM-5. Adolescents administered the Auditory Selective Attention Test (ASAT). Parents were asked to complete the Conner’s Parent Rating Scale-Revised: Long Form (CPRS-R:L), Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale-Children and Adolescents (BDEFS-CA), and SNAP-IV ADHD Symptom Rating Scale.
Results: Adolescents with ADHD-I exhibited higher scores on subscales related to inattention and executive functions compared to the control group. In the ASAT performance, adolescents with ADHD-I demonstrated significantly lower accuracy percentages and longer reaction times in both monaural and dichotic listening conditions. Negative correlations were found between subscales of CPRS-R:L, such as hyperactivity, cognitive problems/inattention, global index, and restlessness/impulsivity, and accuracy percentages in monaural and dichotic listening. Positive correlations were identified with reaction times. Subscales of BDEFS-CA, including organization and problem-solving, impulse control, self-motivation, and ADHD index scores, showed significant correlations with both monaural and dichotic listening performance. Linear regression analysis revealed that the only subscale with a significant effect on ASAT performance was the SNAP-IV inattention subscale.
Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that adolescents with ADHD-I exhibit significant impairments in auditory selective attention and auditory processing performance compared to healthy controls. In both listening conditions, greater inattention symptom severity was associated with reduced accuracy percentages and prolonged reaction times. These findings suggest that adolescents with ADHD-I have increased sensitivity to distracting stimuli and diminished ability to effectively differentiate auditory stimuli.
