Abstract Aims: Treatment effectiveness is a key concern for professionals working with pediatric psychiatric patients. Current research rarely incorporates the perspectives of clinical psychologists and child psychiatrists regarding therapeutic and non-therapeutic factors in inpatient pediatric psychiatric care. Thus, our exploratory study aimed to systematically examine perceived effective and ineffective practices as reported by these professionals and to develop a comprehensive model of therapeutic and non-therapeutic factors in inpatient pedopsychiatric care.
Methodology: The study sample comprised 61 respondents (28 child psychiatrists and 33 clinical psychologists) who completed an online questionnaire designed to assess therapeutic and non-therapeutic factors of inpatient care, differences between inpatient and outpatient treatment, and key areas requiring improvement. Data were analyzed using thematic and descriptive analytical methods.
Results: Seven interrelated categories emerged, describing therapeutic and non-therapeutic factors of inpatient care: the complexity of therapeutic interventions, interaction and collaboration with the external world, approach to the patient, staff, patient community, diagnostic and treatment procedures, and the treatment environment and services. These findings were synthesized into a comprehensive multidimensional model of inpatient pediatric psychiatric care.
Conclusions: The developed multidimensional model offers significant potential as a practical tool for evaluating best practices, maintaining high standards of pediatric psychiatric care, and guiding its future development.
