Contribution title THE EFFECTS OF CHRONOTYPE ON EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS IN CHILDREN WITH COGNITIVE DISENGAGEMENT SYNDROME

Abstract Aim: In this study, we aimed to determine chronotype, executive functions and their relationship among children diagnosed with Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) aged 8-13 years.
Methods: Thirty-two children with CDS and 30 healthy controls were assessed using a semi-structured psychiatric interview Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia. Two subsets of the WISC-R and the Stroop Test were administered to children, while parents completed the Barkley Child Attention Scale (BCAS), SNAP-IV Parent Rating Scale, Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC), and Children’s Chronotype Questionnaire (CCQ).
Results: Children with CDS showed significantly greater impairments in all executive function subdomains of BRIEF compared to the control group (p < 0.01). Total time and errors on the Stroop Test were higher in the CDS group (p = 0.028 and 0.009, respectively). Chronotype differences between the groups were not significant (p = 0.700), but children with CDS reported more sleepiness problems (p = 0.009). In all participants, those with eveningness tendencies exhibited greater impairments in planning and metacognition (p = 0.013 and 0.046, respectively). Linear regression analysis identified CDS diagnosis and chronotype as significant factors influencing executive function impairments (p = 0.001 and 0.012, respectively).
Conclusion: Executive functions were more impaired and sleepiness problems were more frequent in children with CDS. Evening chronotype was associated with greater planning and metacognition impairments and more sleep difficulties. Having a diagnosis of CDS and the chronotype characteristics have a significant effect on impairments in executive functions.
