This think tank aims to stimulate discussion about who we should be intervening with, how and why in families where a parent has a mental illness.
Three interventions, Child Talk, Let’s Talk about Children and the Family Model of Care will be discussed in relation to this question. Child Talk consists of a meeting with the parent and then the parent and children together that aims to support parenting, promote children’s adaptive coping, identify problems in children, and provide advice for further support. Let’s Talk about Children is a two session discussion with parents that aims to support functional parenting, promote parents’ agency and make children and parenting an ongoing topic in the parent’s treatment. The Family Model of Care is based on an ecological, strength based, case management philosophy that targets the parent, child and the family as a whole. The presentation will conclude with results from a systematic review in this area which found that interventions designed for parents predominately encouraged the parent to promote children’s development, while children’s interventions sought to encourage children’s adaptive coping, with little/no focus on family dynamics. The audience will be asked to consider their role, workplace and the family members they might intervene with and how, with the limitations and implications of each approach contested and discussed.
