Introduction We have developed a brain-computer interface (BCI) based attention training programme to treat inattentive symptoms of ADHD. Two pilot trials were conducted to obtain preliminary efficacy data and ensure feasibility of this 8-week treatment programme. Methods A total of 172 children aged 6-12 diagnosed with ADHD were enrolled in this trial. They were randomized to either the treatment group or control group, and did not receive co-intervention. The wait-list control group received similar treatment after 8 weeks. Both groups additionally received monthly booster training after the 8-week intervention. The primary outcome was the clinician-rated ADHD Rating Scale at 8 weeks. Results Using an intention to treat analysis, inattentive scores on the ADHD Rating Scale improved by 3.5 +/- 3.87 in the treatment group and by 1.9 +/- 4.42 in the wait-list control group. The effect size was small at 0.38 (0.07-0.77). Hyperactive-impulsive symptoms did not show significant improvement. Conclusion The BCI-based attention training programme may be used as an adjunct therapy. It has the potential to be developed for home-based application and further trial may be conducted to test the efficacy with a longer period of treatment. |
