ATTACHMENT STYLES OF PARENTS WITH A CHILD SUFFERING FROM AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER Ben Abid.H, Chouikh .A, Miladi.w , Mtiraoui.A, Brahim.T, Gaddour.N, Ben Haj Ali.B Psychiatry Department, Farhat Hached general hospital Sousse, Tunisia Introduction : It has been suggested that parents attachement style would influence child psychoaffective development. Thus results still controversial. Objective : The study aimed to assess attachment styles of parents with a child suffering from ASD and to examine associations between parent’s attachment style and sociodemographic characteristics. Method : We carried out a cross-sectional study in the psychiatry department of Farhat Hached general hospital of Sousse (Tunisia). Parents of children diagnosed with ASD (according to the DSM-5 diagnosis criteria) followed-up during the three-month period of January to March 2016 were recruited. Socio-demographic variables (gender, marital status, history of psychiatric disorders) were collected. Attachement styles were assessed using the Revised adult attachment scale (RAAS). Results : Fifty-one parents were recruited. 64.7% of them exhibited a secure attachment style. Insecure attachment style was significantly associated with a history of childhood violence (p = 0.006) and neglect (p = 0.006). No other significant associations were found. Conclusion : Our results suggest that parents’attachment style do not interfere with ASD. Further studies with larger samples sizes are needed to better explore this association. |
