This one hour interactive / participatory presentation will allow the participants to get a first-hand working knowledge of how to use motivational interviewing (MI) with their patients. There will be three (3) specific “real play” interactive sessions where the participants in this workshop will pair-up with another participant and practice interviewing and being interviewed about real-life issues.
The concepts and skills discussed and practiced in this session will be as follows:
1. Present the four basic elements of MI. Discussion (5 min.)
a. MI Spirit
b. OARS
c. Change Talk
d. MI Principles
2. Practice the Spirit of MI through “real play” scenarios of participants. (15 min.)
a. This practice session will help each participant to become more collaborative in their interviewing skills within their own style.
b. Learning how to evoke change within or patients’ sessions will be performed.
c. Allowing autonomy in the decision-making process will be studied.
3. Demonstration and practice “real play” the concept of OARS + 1. (15 min.)
a. Open-ended questions
b. Affirmations about the patients’ abilities, strengths, and efforts
c. Reflections
d. Summarize the big picture & highlighting the change talk.
4. Demonstrate and practice “real play” the skills of evoking Change Talk. (15 min.)
a. Engaging techniques taught
b. Focus through negotiating the agenda.
c. Evoking by assessing the patient’s readiness to make a change.
d. Planning by asking about “next steps”
5. Summarize and offering advice for your patients. Discussion (5 min.)
a. +1 is offering up advise and planning for the next session.
6. Principles of MI. Discussion (5 min)
a. R – Resist the righting reflex
b. U – Understand your patient’s motivation
c. L – Listen to your patient
d. E – Empower your patient
