A. Introduction Workshop Process – 20 minutes
I.Theoretical Proposition:
Salutogenesis and SOC-13 describe conceptually & measure qualitatively the general worldview of persons and capabilities that enable health. Human practice actually uses a mix of general narratives, such as worldview, and particular narratives, such as about illness, work, family. Human understanding is enabled by the complementary nature of dynamic shifts between general and particular narratives. Sense of Coherence is a composite result of such dynamics.
Salutogenesis and SOC can be extended and improved by combining worldview narratives with particular narratives. Particular narratives’ SOC assessment uses same basic domains of worldview, or general, narratives – personal interaction, resources and meaning/motivation.
II. Rationale and Methods
A particular narrative instantiates into practice the implications of its complementary worldview.
By example, Finnish shipyard workers were at high risk for Diabetes Mellitus II (DMII) when SOC-13 (General) Scores were low. Particular narratives of work could help prevention with at risk workers. SOC-13-Work-P (Particular) could ask how work affects acquisition and use of time/resources for self-care (exercise, healthier meals)
SOC-13 has been used to investigate delivery complications for expecting mothers. A particular pregnancy narrative complements Mother’s worldview. SOC-13-Pregnancy-particular could ask: Does your family understand the challenges of your pregnancy? Inter alia.
III.Benefits
Particular Narratives expand understanding sources of wellness and illness.
Useful in clinical, work, other settings to clearly note challenges and possible help for person(s) involved.
Expands, unifies, simplifies foundational concepts of being human and of health (ontology). Links to multiple fields and measures (epistemology) such as narrative psychology, narrative medicine, Integrated mind-body research.
B.Participant Engagement – 35 minutes
Participants work in pairs. 5 minutes: provided simple background context to fill in SOC-13-Particular questionnaire. 15 minutes - fill in the questionnaires. 15 minutes - discuss with partners.
C. Group Discussion – 20 minutes. Participants share experience, questions, comments.
